The LifeDiscipler is one of those things. The purpose of the LifeDiscipler is to use modern technology to get you into the Word of God, which is an admirable goal. However, purpose aside, I don't think that it accomplishes that very well nor do I agree with its implicit philosophy of discipleship.First, the technical details. LifeDiscipler is very cheaply made, reminding me of one of those small electronic video games you used to get in McDonald's Happy Meals. Visually, it's akin to a classic ipod, with a 2" by 1" viewing screen and a circular d-pad system below. Screen size only allows for one short verse to be viewed at a time, and the standard LCD screen--while the cheapest--makes it almost impossible to read due to reflection from the screen. It also runs on a 3-volt lithium watch battery.
Second, the functional details. LifeDiscipler is not a virtual Bible. Instead, it's a collection of 1500 verses on 44 different life subjects (Marriage, Addiction, Baptism, etc.). Every 15, 30, or 60 minutes, the device can be set to emit an alarm and call up a Bible verse on whatever subject you have chosen. The intended goal is to have the user be continually in the Scriptures. Menus are very basic, however that's probably the best feature of the device.
Frankly, this product is a turnoff for me just because of how it's made. The list price is $29.99, meaning I could buy a nice study Bible with that kind of money, which I believe would be a better purpose. But where I really dislike this product is in its inherent philosophy:
Read a Bible verse every 15, 30, or 60 minutes and you will lead a life of discipleship.
I can't advocate this at all. Discipleship is about much more than looking at an out of context verse of Scripture every so often. It's about living life as the children of God. LifeDiscipler is attempting to be an easy way to spiritual maturity. Its intended goal is noble, but its methodology is deeply flawed.
As a part of this review I was asked to give an "unbiased opinion as to the possible impact it may have on [user's] faith and relationship with Christ." I have a painful answer. I think it will impact one's faith negatively by giving them a shallow and superficial feeling that they are "in the Word." This is a Christian niche product, and maybe there's a niche for this where I can be proven wrong--but I don't see it.
