This speaking dictionary is the ideal way for kids to progress quickly in their study of English. It contains Merriam-Webster’s Elementary Dictionary and a Franklin simplified thesaurus—along with a package of features making it easy to learn new words. This one device includes Franklin Phonetic Spell Correction to build spelling skills, a Confusables feature that helps differentiate between commonly confused words, such as they’re vs. their vs. there, and a Classmates function that lists words by category grouping words like tiger, cheetah and jaguar. Plus, it clearly articulates headwords through a recorded voice and delivers definitions using text-to-speech technology. Our speaking dictionary gives young students the best technology to study, and to learn to love the English language.

Merriam-webster's Speaking Elementary Dictionary with Spell Corrector KID-1250 Review

Yeah, I find that irksome--that and the fact that a screwdriver is necessary in order to gain access to the battery compartment (my guess is that generations of kids who glowed in the dark due to the ability to change their own batteries is the basis for this oh-so-cautious executive decision).
Now on to the good stuff. This is actually a very clever, functional device. It's very cute, kid-sized, and comes loaded with a plethora of functions; these include definitions for 32,000 words that don't seem excessively dumbed down and include etymology, a thesaurus, rhyming, word games (Hangman, Jumble, and Flashcards), "Confusables" (which differentiates between homonyms, homophones, and homographs), the ability to highlight any word within a definition and apply the aforementioned functions to it, the choice to see a word written in script, and the ability to time the child's reading as well as to save words to a personal list for review and practice. It's also programmed to correct spelling for phonetic-but-misspelled entries. All in all, pretty darned impressive.
Of course, the major hook is that the dictionary talks, thus enabling the child to hear words pronounced correctly...at least in theory. However, the electronic voice is so stilted and unnatural as to be bizarre; the thought of a generation of children emulating their electronic dictionaries is a tad disconcerting. This feature can be disabled; the dictionary can also be used with earphones (don't get too excited--the jack's included, the earphones are with the batteries...elsewhere). In addition, considering that there's a choice to hear or not to hear, it seems that it might have been a good idea to have included phonetic respellings (yeah, it's a word) such as those found in a standard dictionary. After all, it's never too early to start stressing the importance of looking up words (at 55, my Merriam-Webster Collegiate is never more than a few feet away from me when I write). The electronic option isn't always going to be available.
The bottom line: is this expensive gadget worth it? Frankly, I rather doubt it. Kids lose and break stuff on a regular basis and as cute as this is, it should be augmented with a real dictionary. It's possible that this could make building vocabulary fun and engaging and on that basis, it should be at least considered. I'll update with a user verdict when its intended (seven-year-old) recipient gives me some feedback.

Update as of 10/5/10: The recipient made it a point to ask her mother for the phone when I called a few minutes ago. She thanked me and told me she LOVES the dictionary and has been using it on a regular basis since the semester started (it seems the teacher is unable to give satisfactory definitions of new vocabulary that she introduces in class). Her mother subsequently cited that the definitions are clear, that their pronunciation can be heard (the bizarre vocal quality is apparently not a problem), and that they appear in both script and print are extremely helpful features. I'd change the review to a full five stars if I could based on this endorsement. However, I'd still like to get the little one in the habit of using a dictionary that doesn't require batteries as well. :)

Update as of 4/6/11: I was pressed into emergency baby-sitting duty last week and thought I should mention that quite out of the blue, my little friend told me AGAIN just how much she relies on her speaking dictionary. Clearly, this is a winner.

Babylon Handheld Hebrew-English Dictionary Review

Better than a dictionary? Well, not quite. But in its own right invaluable. It does what no dictionary can: immediate gratification. I keep mine in my pocket and whenever I hear a word that piques my curiosity, I look it up. How far more effective than waiting to get home then page through a dictionary (if by some miracle you'll still remember).

Another absolutely stunning feature is the ability to see a list of morphologically related words. Whereas a mere definition can elude the varied meaning of a word, seeing its root-sharing relatives not only gives a deeper sense of meaning but makes the word more memorable. There is no "special" feature built it. But it just so happens that the words are listed alphabetically, so it's easy to just scroll down to see which words precede and follow. The same goes for idiomatic expressions so many of which no or few dictionaries provide. I'm convinced that it's far more superior way to absorb Hebrew syntactical structures. For example, one can see the connection between '' ''"shev"-- sit and "shev v'hunach" '''' '''' ''''--idiom for laissez-fair but literally meaning to be sitted and to be placed, to be allowed to rest.

If used frequently (I keep mine in my purse), the Babylon can advance the learning pace tenfold. By giving quick and easy access to 6 million words/expressions, it speeds up absorption and, for me, reinforces the memory of words(roots) already learned. Most importantly, it builds a sense of cohesive language schema that makes learning and retaining new words that much easier. Once I understand how language "behaves," I can predict the variations.

The Babylon is wonderful for beginners who may not know the root and have to look up the word in whatever form available. The dictionary provides all the conjugative forms. The hardest part for beginners is the absence of nekud. So there's room for improvement.

Franklin Webster's Third New Unabridged International Dictionary (NID-260) Review

The Franklin electronic dictionary/thesaurus is very compact, clear, and easy to use. I've been using my Sharp for the same purpose and find the Sharp superior for my uses. I am writing my memoirs and need to look up words fast and nothing beats Sharp for speed. For example, if you want to go from thesaurus to dictionary using the Franklin, you have to first go to the library function and then click on dictionary; with the Sharp, there's no need to do this. You just push the dictionary key and you're there. You can transfer from one to the other instantly.

What I've ended up doing is using the Franklin as an addendum for the Sharp so I have access to a larger choice of words. Also, you can have more fun with the Franklin because there are more functions to play with. I'm just not into playing with electronic gadgets.

Either the Sharp or the Franklin would be extremely useful for students, writers, or just people who love words. Either one of them beats a clunky paper book by a whole lot. I've given the Sharp as gifts to my grandson and my son.

One more thing, there's a huge price difference between the two instruments. The Sharp costs under $100; the Franklin is over $250.

Enjoy!

Casio EX-word Electronic Dictionary XD-B9800 (Japan Import) Review

Disclaimer: I am an ardent Japanese student with an intermediate skill level. I am now using this in my college studies in the language.

I found that this dictionary is very easy to use and has more features than I know what to do with. I believe even a beginner can use this device, provided that he/she has someone to give him/her initial setup guidance. I like the color screen and the versatility of the second smaller screen.

The most often used feature is the kanji look up feature, you draw the kanji out in the box (stroke order does not matter). It does a pretty good job of deciphering what you are looking for. The most often used dictionary is the Kenkyusha dictionary.

Comparing this to my older WordTank G50, it is not as sturdy and quite a bit larger. However, it is still small enough to easily carry around and study enough for daily operation. I recommend getting a nice case for it. The batteries are also going strong, its been ~6mnths so far.

Very pleased with my purchase.

Franklin MWD-1440 Dictionary and Thesaurus with Bookman II Review

As a heavy on-the-road word processing user of my Palm -- made possible by DataViz's Documents To Go 4.0 (available from Amazon, which downloads MS Word documents to my PDA) -- I've found myself using my Franklin MWD-1440 Dictionary and Thesaurus with Bookman II almost constantly! Granted, its not as thorough or as in-depth as the large book-style dictionary and thesaurus which I keep at home next to my PC, but, with its portable size, I can always take it with me wherever I go -- such as to my kids' sports practice or music lessons (where I'll write product reviews such as this one), or when I'm traveling away from home for business.Even though its volume of entries is not as extensive, the Franklin is actually superior in some ways to both my book-style dictionary and thesaurus, and to my laptop PC (personal computer). Here's how I've found the Franklin to be most useful:For spell checking. Just punch in the word -- as you think it should be spelled -- and the Franklin will fix the spelling for you. With a book-style dictionary (as you already know), you're pretty much on your own!For definitions. The Franklin provides the meanings of words -- which is something you won't get from your PC's spell checker. This can be very handy, especially when confirming the proper usage of the words suggested by the thesaurus. For its thesaurus. The Franklin provides both synonyms and antonyms. And you only need to enter the word once -- to look it up in both the dictionary and the thesaurus, (which is very convenient). The Franklin also has a very legible five-line display -- which is vastly superior (and requires a lot less up-and-down and side-to-side scrolling) as compared to other electronic dictionaries that have only a single or double line array. The replaceable (and long-lasting) watch-style batteries also give the unit a very low profile. (Franklin's other less expensive models, by contrast, use four AAA size batteries, and are noticeably thicker in appearance.)When I acquired my Franklin, I also purchased the available Bookman II interchangeable Encyclopedia and Word Game cartridges. But, to be quite honest, since I use the dictionary and thesaurus so frequently, I haven't had much of a chance (or desire) to try out these other modules.(Buy the MWD-1440 for the five-line display and its thin size -- and not for the Bookman II capability. The improvement in usability and portability you'll experience from these extra features is definitely worth the slightly higher cost.)No matter where you're writing, the Franklin MWD-1440 Dictionary and Thesaurus is a great tool for finding just the right word to use.
