Franklin Electronics BFS-2160 Speaking French-English Dictionary Review

There are few French-English translators like this for sale anywhere. I guess because people use their smart phones a lot now. It if for this reason that I keep buying the newest Franklin brand instead of trying other brands. I have an iPhone but still far prefer this translator because it is fast and gives you all the information you could possible want about a word and the different ways it can be used. It also has helpful examples of the word used in context. I also love that it practically has a built in 501 verbs and their conjugation book in it (not litterally).

I read books in French all the time and this has served me well when I don't know a word or I want to practice the conjugation of a new verb. I used to love the translator back when I was a student because looking up words was so easy and fast.

There is one BIG DOWNSIDE to Franklin translators: They break! That is why I'm on my fourth (granted in 10 years). I anticpate one will last me 2-3 years, before it suddenly dies (and not because of the battery). It is for this reason, I recommend it to people who can afford it and are really dedicated to learning a language.

Besta CD-268S Way English-Chinese Bilingual Electronic Dictionary Review

My son is learning Chinese and French, so I took the chance and got this for him as a Christmas gift. It's really great! This dictionary can speak both English and Chinese with really very good pronunciations. After entering English word, you get the Chinese characters, then press the button, a woman appears and speaks all those Chinese words, and at the same time the Chinese word she is saying appears one by one (with pi-yin indicated) on the bottom of the screen. The biggest surprise is that there is a 13-language dictionary, including French, Italian, Spanish, German, Russian, etc.; and the dictionary can also provide pronunciation of these words in all languages!! You only need to enter the word in one language, then press "enter", then all other 12 language translation appears on the screen, and it says the word in whichever the language you select! We only know French, Spanish, and a little bit of Italian and Russian. The pronunciations of these other languages are acceptable (although not as good as English and Chinese); the vocabulary of these other languages are much smaller than English & Chinese dictionary, but for an elementary kid, it can teach my son a lot lot more in the years to come! At this moment, my son is reading a book with many French and Italian in it, so this dictionary is very handy for his reading.

By the way, the memory space in the unit is not enough to download the 13-language dictionary. Following the direction of the manual, we bought a 8 GB micro SDHC card, and inserted it in the unit. Then, install the software of the disk (which came with the unit) in the PC, then connect the unit with PC to download the 13-language dictionary into your unit. Then it worked! Very easy to do!

We are very please with this, and thought others may want to know this. The description at Amazon does not do the justice to what this product can do!!

WikiReader Pocket Wikipedia Review

Got mine 5 days ago [...] and have had some fun with it. However the fun was dampened by a defective touch screen. The bottom 1/4 to 1/2 inch of the screen doesn't respond to touch, meaning I can't access the bottom row of letters or the space bar. I contacted customer support and the were prompt in replying. They had me load a different kernel file, hoping that would fix it, but it didn't. they said they will be shipping out a replacement soon, so hopefully this one will work as designed.

Aside from the touch screen, the co-workers I showed it to thought it was pretty slick.
My co-workers all carry Blackberrys, but due to corporate policy can't install wikipedia software. I don't have a smart phone, due to no Verizon service where I live, so this works great for me. I like the fact that it uses standard AAA batteries and will run for 90 hours of powered on time.

It also has a couple of hidden features when you hold down a button while powering up. Search throws you a list of forth programs that are mostly diagnostics. There is a little line drawing program that is fun to scribble with, and also a calculator. The calculator can also be accessed by holding down the history button while powering up. Finally, the random button on power up is some sort of serial communication screen. One other thing, one of the diagnostics displays a reading from a thermistor, so I suppose someone could create a tiny app using that as well.

In the short time that I have had it, I noticed a couple of small issues with the data on it. It looks like it is missing some numeric info. The example I noticed was the wikipedia article on prairie dogs as to their size and quantities. Also some special characters, like foreign letters, are not displayed correctly. I am pretty sure they will correct that down the road though, as it should not be too tough to do.

An 8gb microSD card holds the data and system. It looks like buying the updates might not be a bad idea as 8gb SD cards go for around $20 each anyway, and the $[...] update charge will get you two of those. Not bad to have a spare and you can always clear an extra and use it in another device.

Update. Got the replacement Wikireader, and it works as it is supposed to now. It can't help but make me better informed.

I would love to see them add some e-reader functionality. There would be plenty of room to add a pile of Project Gutenberg reading material.

I may end up getting a couple more of the for Christmas presents.

CASIO Spanish / English Color Translator Dictionary EW-S4000E EWS4000E - SPANISH VERSION Review

This is not your father's pocket translator. It contains 12 Oxford dictionaries in one awesome device. This one is the Spanish-English model and has dictionaries to go from English to Spanish or Spanish to English as well as separate Spanish and English dictionaries and an English thesaurus, all of which make it an ideal tool for the Spanish-English professional interpreter or translator. However, it also has a myriad of other English dictionaries including dictionaries of Collocations (typical word combinations), Idioms, Grammar & Usage, Learner's Wordfinder, Business English, Phrasal Verbs, a guide to British & American culture, and a Britannica Concise Encyclopedia! These tools make it useful for a student of English at any level, beginner to advanced. There is also a vocabulary word tool which you can use to compile lists of vocabulary words for later study -- another useful tool for students. This device is an upgrade to the older EW-S3000V and 3100V, which have a silver body and a grayscale screen. The screen on this 4000E and the only slightly older 4000C is a beautiful color screen and it has a black body -- much more attractive in my opinion. You may customize some of the images on this device with your own .jpg files, also accessible via a micro SD card. The 4000E has newer versions of almost all dictionaries. A colleague of mine has the 4000C and I compared the two: most of the copyrights for the dictionaries on the 4000C are around 2004 while on the 4000E the copyrights are around 2010.

The keys on this device are rubbery and have a good feel & grip. The keyboard layout is QWERTY and the layout of the various function buttons is fairly intuitive. If I had one gripe it would be that the scroll up/down buttons and the page up/down buttons are on opposite sides of the keyboard. Battery life seems very good so far on 2 AA batteries. I have been using this thing every day for a week for at least an hour a day and the battery meter still shows a full charge. It is small enough to fit in my suit coat pocket (or a purse) yet is robust enough for this professional interpreter to take on all his assignments and still feel suitably equipped and ready for anything!

***ONE VERY IMPORTANT NOTE***
The manual for this product and some of the function keys are in Spanish! I'm not sure if an English manual is available on Casio's website, but if you don't read at least a little Spanish, I would recommend checking this out first.

I like the fact that this is King James Bible version as it is the version I trust and I have a graduate degree in the Bible. It is easy to look up verses or words with this e-book. This will not translate a typed sentance to a spoken translation.
It will translate a typed sentance to a displayed translation.
This product will only voice translate factory programed phrases.
Awkward to switch back and forth between the host language and foreign language.
Very very very slow when translating a selected word to speaking the foreign word.
Very very very long pauses between words when voice translating the pre-programed phrase's
Speaker has very low volume...... even on max setting.
This product needs a lot of upgrade's to make it a valuable tool.
That being said it is the only portable product on the market at this time that will translate a typed sentance to a displayed foreign translation.
