My wife came over from China in 2008 and the Besta electronic translator I purchased for her in China broke shortly after she arrived. We liked the Besta, but decided to spend the extra money on this unit due to its wireless (Wi-Fi) features. Being able to have quick wireless Internet access while on the road was of great interest to both of us.

Likes: Easy to use and it's loaded with tons of features and a fully-stocked 187,000 word Oxford English dictionary and Oxford English-Chinese illustrated dictionary. Voice pronunciation is provided to assist the user in pronouncing/hearing words. Sentence translation is also provided, but be careful with this one. English and Chinese sentences don't translate cleanly on any translator. Still, it's a great feature over the single-word translators. Sentence translation was a very important feature that greatly helped my wife and I communicate when we first met and this translator does very well in this area. The added multimedia features make the translator into a media companion. You can play MP3 and .avi files, take pictures with the built-in camera (located on the bottom of the unit), and even capture video. All this can be downloaded to your computer.

Dislikes: The wireless feature is very flawed. I have a Lynksys wireless router at home and it simply will not connect to it. At work it connects to the local Netgear router. On the road, most of the time, it cannot connect to whatever router is in the hotel/motel. While on a steamship to Nantucket, Mass. we were able to connect, but the steamship's secure Web site required a cookie to be written to the computer to get out on the Internet. This unit can't do that, so while we could connect to the router, we couldn't actually get on the Internet. If you purchase this unit for its wireless capability, you may be very disappointed. Also, keep in mind, many Web sites require plug-ins that must be loaded on your computer. This translator doesn't support them natively, which means you won't be able to use these sites. If you're able to get wireless access working, Internet access is reduced to just general Web browsing. Don't expect to watch YouTube videos or play Facebook games. If you want to get a form from a government Web site, you'll probably be fine. As long as you can get a wireless connection to the Internet, you should be fine to download documents of reasonable size.

This unit should be purchased primarily for translation and language education. This is the primary purpose for which it was created and it does this very well. If you approach your purchase accepting this, then you'll probably be happy with it. Don't get too wrapped up in the rest of the bells-and-whistles. If they work for you--great! If they don't, you still have a decent electronic translator to assist in language translation and education.
