I was a bit skeptical of this at first -- the price seemed a little "too good". After testing it out with different barcodes, and using it for what I bought it for (entering DVD barcodes into DVDProfiler), I must say I'm very impressed.

Initial impressions after opening it -- this thing just feels cheap. A very light plastic, light-weight item with what feels to be a poorly put together button (it seems like something that might last a few years, but that the button will be the first to break). With that said, it is affordable enough to ignore that fact, and if you get even a years worth of use out of it, it was more than worth it.

I think the black fits most modern PCs/equipment. For the price, it's probably the best looking scanner out there -- you can get a cheaper one if you don't mind some oddities with getting it setup.. or it looking like a Cat CueCat PS/2 Standard Barcode Scanner

The USB cable is a good length at 6 feet - it's also pretty thick (which was unexpected, but very nice).

The scanner is very easy to use -- hit the button and the LED reader will light for 2 seconds.. scan your barcode within that time. If it scans, you'll hear a BEEP from the built-in speaker (also very nice!), the barcode will input as text and it will hit "Enter". This means if you scan into a text program, it will break each barcode into its own line. If you have a browser open, it will search for the barcode. If you use a program like DVDProfiler, it will search for the barcode after scanning. A huge timesaver!

The scanner is plug-and-play (at least in Windows). I tried it both on Windows XP and Windows 7 and it instantly started up and worked great (no installing drivers - no installing special software).

There is no "Settings" panels for the scanner, unfortunately. Instead it comes with a large printed manual filled with barcodes -- you're supposed to scan these to change settings to the scanner. A bit of an inconvenience (since you have to keep the manual in a safe spot), but if you just want it for basic home usage, you can probably do without making any changes.

Accuracy is very good with professionally-done barcodes on flat surfaces.
CD's, DVD's, videogames, boxes.. no problem. When scanning rounded objects (like a soda bottle), I noticed it struggling (often taking multiple scans to get it). Also, anything obscuring even a small amount of the barcode can create problems - some DVD cases has a bend on the plastic case (over a small part of the barcode) which prevented them from scanning.

Very small barcodes worked (though they sometimes took 2 scans). Upside-down barcodes worked (and scanned correctly).

My own printed barcodes (using a label-printer) would not scan. Some barcodes wouldn't scan either. Check the item description for supported barcode types.

Ones that I didn't expect to work (such as Amazons own barcodes, which are an ASIN #) worked great.

Overall a good home scanner -- I wouldn't use it for business purposes where you depend on it, but for personal usage it works nicely.
