We have had cross-cut shredders for years but always the regular household kind, the last one we got being an AmazonBasics 12-Sheet Cross-Cut Paper/CD/Credit Card Shredder with Basket. All of these shredders performed well but were noisy and had small baskets. Enter the Fellows Powershred 4609001: micro-cut shredding, quiet and big. Here are my comments, in no particular order:PROs:
- Extremely quiet: I could not believe how nice and quiet it sounds. It makes a deep, powerful 'purr' where other, smaller shredders whir and screech. I had to restrain myself not to shred every piece of paper within my reach, because it sounds so rich and powerful, nothing like our old shredders had :-)
- Large capacity basket: Our AmazonBasics shredder has a 4.8 gallon basket, which is OK but still requires frequent emptying. The Fellows on the other hand almost doubles that size to 9 gallons. Plus, since it shreds with a micro-cut, there is much less air space left between the pieces. This basket will take a long time to fill up.
- The Micro-Cut: Teeny-tiny specks of paper is what the Powershred produces. All I could think of when first peeking into the basket after shredding something was: If the embassy in Iran had had this shredder in the movie 'Argo', the kids who were tasked with putting the shredded material back together would have been so out of luck... :-)
- Casters: Fellows includes 4 user-install-able casters with this shredder. A good thing because it is quite the job to move it from place to place otherwise.
- The shredder comes with a small bottle of Fellows Shredder Oil and three plastic basket liners - a nice touch to get one started right away.
CONs (if you want to call it that):
- Heavy: When this shredder arrived on our doorstep I could hardly move it inside. Amazon lists the weight as being 50 lbs, and it felt about like that.
- Big & Tall: This is a machine that needs space. It is much taller and also wider than the regular household shredder. We had our old one in the kitchen sitting next to a sideboard (to shred the daily junk mail) and when we placed the Fellows in the exact same space, it partially blocked access to the sideboard. So make sure you measure first if you have enough room for this thing.
- Price: This point is probably the most significant. This is not the shredder to get if you have an occasional document to dispose of. It is way too expensive for that. While I love the Powershred's performance, the price is a major obstacle. We will be moving overseas in the foreseeable future and naturally will have a ton of old papers to destroy, so this machine will come in very handy but if you are looking for a machine to shred normal amounts of junk mail and documents, you are likely better of with a cheaper model.
- CDs/DVDs cannot be shredded with this machine. This is a minor point for me. As long as it does staples and credit cards, I'm happy.
SUMMARY:
I love it. Period.
