I bought this typewriter for my Executive Assistant, when her old Brother typewriter broke down. She really likes it - she still has to type bills of lading via typewriter (we are technologically sound otherwise!), and she sometimes isn't given much notice by the owners when she has to type up 10 or 12 of the bills of lading in a big hurry. This typewriter has it all, is easy to figure out right out of the box, and is relatively quiet when it's operating. DON'T FORGET TO GET THE 3.5" FLOPPY DISK DRIVE!! It plugs into your computer and allows you to input all the data you need for whatever project you are doing, it retains formatting, etc., so when you put your sheet of paper or bill of lading in the typewriter, you only have to hit a couple of buttons, and the typewriter types it all for you (read - mostly hands OFF!) It has been a Godsend - I couldn't find anything else that did what the Assistant needed & feel lucky to have found this! Great product, fast service. A+++

Fellowes Powershred 325Ci 100% Jam Proof Cross-Cut Paper Shredder (3831001) Review

For a week straight after receiving this shredder, I had worked through a printer box worth of material a day and on the last day, two boxes worth. It took about 40-45 minutes non-stop each box, which could have gone faster if I did not spend so much time (re)reading some of the material before I destroyed it (you can never be too careful). It worked great. A few times there I got sloppy and inserted more than the 22-page limit, but it would either stop and warn me or reverse itself then feed them through anyway.

The five free bags it came with were sturdy, but instead of getting a replacement box of bags with the order, I bought a box of 200-count 33-gallon clear bags with built-in tie handles for much less at one of the big-box stores. The bin is only 22 gallons but the extra 11 gallons and the tie handles allowed me to cram more confetti into each bag, allowing less confetti to spill out when removing the bag from the bin and when tying it up. The 33-gallon bags were thinner than the ones made specifically for the shredder, but they did the job. There could be problems lifting a full bag out of the bin when the bags catch and rip on the lip of the trim that surrounds the top, which is easily fixed by using packing tape to cover the seams all the way around on the inside.

After each change of bag, I squirted the included vegetable-based oil across the opening, as recommended and continued on with the shredding. Very quiet. You hear more of the paper crunching on its way to the cutting teeth than you do the motor. Someone I showed it off to was surprised at how quiet it seemed to her.

After about the second box, the stray pieces of confetti that make their way out of the unit when changing the bag start to produce a bit of a mess, partly due to the static that builds up and attracts the pieces to the bin and to the inside of the bay, which all find their way to the outside. But two boxes is a lot of paper and that is such a minor issue for what you get in return, which is a great commercial-grade shredder that is quiet, solidly built, and comes with safety features. I like.

Gear Head PS1000CXB 10 Sheet Cross-Cut Home/Office Shredder with CD/DVD Slot Review

The only reason I didn't give this great shredder five stars is that it doesn't have a handle. It does have wheels that roll nicely, but one has to crouch and push it along to move it. Because of its bulk, it's awkward to carry. Otherwise, it works wonderfully. I've used it for several weeks now and shredded about 15 years of old tax records, etc., and it's really done the job with no jams. Each time I dump the container, I do briefly run it in reverse to get out any little bits that might be caught in the blades. The instructions say to let it rest periodically if one is going to use it for a long period. I just feel the top, and if it's hot, I turn it off and do something else for about 15 minutes. I've found that it shreds single sheets of lightweight cardboard as easily as paper. Though it's supposed to shred 10 sheets of paper at a time, I've stopped at 6 or 7 to be on the safe side. I haven't shredded any CDs, so I can't comment on that feature. I'd highly recommend this shredder, especially if Gear Head puts a handle on the next incarnation. Even without a handle, it does a terrific job, and I'm very pleased with the purchase.

Swingline EX12-05 Super Cross-Cut Shredder, 12 Sheets, 1 User (1757390) Review

I had a Fellowes shredder that I purchased here Fellowes Powershred W-11C 11 Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder (3103201) about 7 months ago so I was happy to compare this Swingline shredder. Boy, what an improvement!! Here's what is so much better on this one:
1) It can truly handle 12 sheets of paper without slowing down. I am shredding old financial documents and I always remove staples no matter what, but this shredder actually shreds 12 sheets with ease.
2) The removable bin is SO EASY to use -- I simply pull out the bin while the shredder stays stationary. The Fellowes was a pain because I had to remove the top shredder part to empty the basket beneath it, usually spilling some paper along the way, then placing it somewhere while I emptied the basket and then placed the shredder back on top.
3) The window shows when I'm filling up the basket; no guessing and having to lift up the shredder top to see how full the basket below it.
4) The ability to shred CDs and credit cards is nice, although I probably won't be shredding any CDs soon. And so I've removed the CD receptacle inside the bin to give me more space for paper shredding.
5) The styling is sleek and I can place it against the wall horizontally so it takes up less room in my office. And because it is heavy it doesn't want to tip over easily.
6) I like that it has an "overheat signal" but I just shredded pretty continuously for about 20 minutes and had NO problem. I did have little pauses while I removed some staples or a stray paper clip but this thing ran great.

Yes, it is quite expensive, and I will definitely update in 6 months. One thing I learned the hard way two shredders ago: definitely buy the recommended shredder lubricant and use it.

UPDATE 2/5/12:
This shredder has definitely met my expectations in terms of continuous shredding time. However, I wish there was some kind of WARNING LIGHT to notify me when I need to empty the bin. More than a few times I've been going along, and then remember to check the bin--only to discover that it is a bit over-full. Then I shut if off, and have to slip my hand & arm in the bin and pull down the shreddings before I can remove the bin all the way. Invariably, it drops some shreddings in the bottom which I then have to scoop out by hand before replacing the bin.

Also, it would be much better to have the entire shredder the silver color instead of black on top, since the process of shredding produces a lot of fine white dust which looks awful coated all over the shredder; the silver color would make that much less noticeable.

UPDATE 3/1/12:
I purchased a Fellowes Powershredc 79Ci for the office. It's $30 more than this Swingline--at least here on Amazon--but to me it's more than worth the extra money. It's much quieter; it DOES have an indicator light to let you know when the bin needs to be emptied and it won't shred until you either push down on the shreddings or empty the receptacle; and it even has indicator light to warn you if you are trying to shred too many sheets of paper at once. For my money, there is no comparison--Fellowes Powershred 79Ci is the one to buy.

Swingline EX10-05 Super Cross-Cut Shredder, 10 sheets, 1 User (1757393) Review

I have tried three shredders in as many months... a new one for home, a new one for work and a new one that I gave to my parents. This is the third one and I'm using it at home. For comparison, the other ones that I chose were:

Fellowes Powershred W-11C 11 Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder (3103201)

and

AmazonBasics 12-Sheet Cross-Cut Paper/CD/Credit Card Shredder with Basket

Compared to the other two, which I suggest you also give a look over, this one has three features that make it stand out:

1. The plastic shred for cards & CD's/DVD's has it's own separate bin inside to keep it from contaminating your shredded paper if you recycle it.
2. It does have a window to check on paper level
3. For the number of pages it can do simultaneously (10) it is fairly compact with a small bin.

The shredder itself is not my preference because of one missing feature: It is not an "auto on" shredder. The manual recommends that between shredding you are to turn the shredder on/off button to off. Most other modern shredders of this capacity are "auto" meaning there is no light that stays on and you can simply turn it on by inserting paper.

That being said, the sound of the motor sounds like this shredder is made by Aurora, which was my first ever shredder.

I rated this shredder 3 stars instead of 5 for two reasons:

1. No auto on/off feature. Instructions say to turn it off after each use.
2. The price of this shredder is almost 1/3 more than the two competitors I also got recently without any marked superior feature other than keeping the shredded plastic separate.

I plan to continue to update this review as I've used the shredder longer, but in general, I still prefer the Amazon Basics as the best/safest all around shredder of the three. If you need one for pure capacity (shredding those nasty credit card offers without opening them) I still would recommend the Fellows that I mentioned above.
