Fellowes Powershred 69Cb 10-Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder Review

Bought this at Staples for $119 on sale - far less than on Amazon at the time of this posting. Would have purchased from Amazon, but they would not match the price. Have used it daily in my home office for a month now.

Three important things to know if you are considering this shredder (and one wish):

1) The unit seems quieter than other home shredders - no biting and grinding fingernails on the chalkboard sounds here. Shreds 10 sheets at a time easily without much noise;

2) If staples and paper clips are put though this shredder by accident, it still operates without jamming - much better than previous shredders I've used; and

3) There is NOT a warning offered if the waste bin gets too high; thus, causing loose shredded paper spillage from time-to-time of you don't watch the waste bin level. Hence, a deduction of one star. It's a shame because this shredder is awesome overall. Using the plastic front-panel window to guage how much paper is in the shredder does not work well because the window does NOT go up to the top of the shredder. It only goes roughly 65% of the way up to the top. Hence, a deduction of one star. It's a shame because this shredder is awesome overall. I would rate this five stars if there was some kind of fill indicator.

Wish: The power cord could be about six inches longer to fit comfortably next to or under a desk. Not sure why because the unit has four wheels that make it highly portable. Currently, the cord seems short and it's not easy to wheel the shredder around my home office with such a short cord, but not worth deducting a star. It just seems like the design engineers skimped on this one perhaps to save cost?

I would recommend purchase even without the overflow bin warning listed in number three above.

This is a very good machine; especially, if you are able to get it for under $130.00.

Wish List:
1. Turn off the lights after after 30 minutes of inactivity.
2. Have the LED lights up the whole center display, when lit.
3. Four all-around-type of casters (with locks like the two being used), instead of the two all-around-type casters and the two big wheels.
4. The shredding is not exactly confetti size. It is cross-cut into pieces approximately 1 �" in length by �" in width. I would prefer if the length were under �".

Additional Information:
5. Machine weighs less than 30 lbs, not the 40+ noted in the description.
6. Shipping weight nears 42 lbs; I believe the information noted in description is reversed.
7. I could not find this machine in Royal's website; it may be new and has not been entered.

Bad design:
8. Grab handle is a dangerous when attempting to roll the shredder by this incorporated handle. This may cause you (the user) to breaker your a finger. Solution: Do not use the handle to move the machine; move it using both hands and not the handle.
9. The Forward and the Backward arrows on the activation buttons seem to be in the wrong direction. These would be applicable if the feeding was to be done downward and extraction was to be done upward. But it is not, it is feed towards the back and extracted towards the front; therefore, it activation keys should be reversed.

All in all, it is a very good shredder; I only gave it four-stars because of the Wish List. Hopefully, Royal will listen to the above comments and incorporate them into this product.

Final words on this product, I would recommend to buy the 16 or 15 page Royal Shredder on four caster wheels as they have a much better design. These have side handles and are easier to move around. If Royal eventually makes a 17 or 18 sheet shredder based on the four casters and side handles design as the 160MX and 150MX, then that is the way to go, but not the RL170MX with the two caster wheels and two side wheels.

Aurora AS1018CD 10-Sheet Cross-Cut Paper/Credit Card/CD Shredder with Basket Review

I bought this shredder to replace an earlier Aurora shredder( AS1015CD ) which basically had identical functions as the AS1018CD. The CD/DVD shredding function has substantially improved over the AS1015CD. The CD/DVD/credit card pieces that came out of this shredder are even finer than the corresponding paper confetti and infinitely better than the 8 pieces( yes only 8 pieces and at times still attached )that came out of AS1015CD. So far, I have shredded paper, credit cards, and CDs with no major issue. Yes, the shredder makes horrible sounds when shredding CDs but it is normal and please stay calm. My typical shredding job is 200 to 300 sheets of 20 lb. 8-1/2 X 11 paper and the frequency is once per week. To date, the shredder has not over-heated at my utilization level( thanks to the improving ventilation design of the AS1018CD over AS1015CD ) and it has jammed only once( ironically by a single sheet of thicker paper but it resumed operation after I used the reverse function to undo the jam ). What I have not tried is AS1018CD's ability to shred 10 sheets in a single pass. I have tried 6 sheets and it worked, but I did not, do not and will not try 10 sheets for fear doing so may damage the tiny gears that drive the cutter block. If that happened, the shredder is gone. My AS1015CD was ruined that way. Except for the price tag for this shredder( I paid only $43 + tax for my AS1015CD compared to $79.98 for this shredder at Amazon.com ), I am very happy with my purchase thus far although the long term durability of AS1018CD remains to be seen. Also, lubricating the shredder block with cooking oil is a good idea and it helps the shredding function. Putting oil in an envelope and then feed it to the shredder is a low cost alternative to lubricant sheets that are available in the market. Just make sure the oiled envelope spans the entire length of the feed slot, otherwise some part of the cutter block will not be lubricated. If you cannot find an envelope that spans the entire feed slot width, you may have to feed a nummber of oiled enveloped along the width of the feed slot to ensure the entire cutting block has been lubicated. One last thing: after the oiled envelope was shredded, run the shredder on reverse for 30 to 60 seconds to spread the oil within the cutter block.

Update( March 16, 2009 ): Jammed the second time over the weekend by acculmulated confetti on the cutter block. Operation resumed after using the reverse function. Recommend emptying or compacting confetti in the basket every 40 sheets of shredding. This shredder cuts regular paper staples like butter. No need to remove them from the papers before feeding to the shredder.

Fellowes Powershred 63Cb 10-Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder with Jam Blocker Technology (4600001) Review

My job requires that I handle and dispose of documents containing sensitive information on a daily basis. While I have used light and medium duty shredders in the past, most of my shredding is performed with our office's communal heavy duty Fellowes shredder that is now several years old. Hands down, the Fellowes Powershred 63Cb is one of the finest shredders I have ever used. I definitely prefer it to any other light and medium duty shredders that I have used, and I have to say that, aside from the largest of jobs, I would probably choose the 63Cb over the old heavy duty unit.

My favorite feature of the 63Cb is the fact that it cross-shreds. As far as security is concerned, there is no comparison between traditional unidirectional shredders and a cross-shredder. Reassembling a cross shredded document would be immensely more difficult than aligning the pieces of a document shredded in one direction. I actually feel quite foolish for not seeking out a better solution to strip shredding sooner.

Beyond performing its function as a document destroyer exceptionally well, the 63Cb also has a couple of great safety features that should be a must have for just about anyone. The first of which is the Safesense Technology that stops shredding immediately when skin touches the bezel that surrounds the paper opening. This is huge for home office use when children might gain access to the machine. I don't know what it is about shredders, but they are irresistible to children. I have to add that, while this is a great feature, additional safety measures should be taken if there is a chance that children could access the machine. Touching the bezel only stops the machine if contact is made with skin. Long sleeves could easily prevent this valuable mechanism from working properly.

The second neat safety feature is the machine's internal thermostat that automatically stops the machine if its maximum operating temperature has been exceeded. The machine will not be operable until it has cooled down to a safe temperature. Anyone that has performed marathon shredding sessions probably knows that it is easy to push a shredder to an unsafe temperature without realizing it until there is smoke or the machine binds up.

The 63Cb can easily handle 10 sheets of paper at a time, with commendable speed; nothing like a heavy duty shredder, but fast nonetheless. I have also had the pleasure of shredding a credit card with the 63Cb. To my amazement it maintained an effective cross-shred even while destroying plastic.

While it is without a doubt good at what it is supposed to do, it is also handsome. I have the black model, and believe it to be pretty sharp; a nice addition to any home office.

I do have one small gripe. The machine should be oiled each time the waste bin is emptied for peak performance. While non-aerosol vegetable oil, which can probably be found in one's kitchen, is the recommended oil, the maintenance manual claims that only a long nozzle container "...such as [the not included] Fellowes 35250" should be used. Why not just include the recommended container? It is unfortunate that this one pesky point of frustration exists, as the 63Cb is otherwise close to faultless.

The Fellowes Powershred 63Cb is truly a pro among amateurs, and I highly recommend it.

Great scanner, once I got it working. I am using this with an Android phone (HTC Evo 4G, running version 4.0). The instructions tell you to pair the scanner with an Android phone using SPP and Bluetooth Connect.apk (Included on a mini CD). So, that is what I tried to do. No matter what I did, it would not work!

After a couple of days of trying to figure out what the problem was ( I am fairly tech savy, so I can usually figure out things on my own), I gave up and called their tech support line. After explaining the problem, the tech said I needed to install it using HID, and that Bluetooth Connect was not necessary! When I said that was not what the instructions said, he just said "trust me, you need to use HID." So, that is what I did, and it worked perfectly the first time. They could have saved me a lot of time and agrivation by just updating their instructions!!

That being said, the scanner works fine, and is about half the price of the other compact, bluetooth, barecode scanner that works with android which I was considering.

The unit is extremely light duty. Six pages are possible, but pushing it. It will also do one credit card, which is good. Included with the manual is a warning sheet stating that the unit is rated at an average continuous run time of 2-4 minutes. Past that time, damage to the unit may result due to overheating and the warranty is voided for such misuse. The shredder paper slot is tight for an 8x11 sheet of paper, allowing little "wiggle room" of paper width.

It is a diamond cut which is better than a strip cut, but not as good as a crosscut for security purposes. The diamonds are approximately 1.5in.x1/4in. (HxW), measured at max width point (middle of diamond).
The unit is small, which could be a plus or a minus. Basket and shredder measure 13in.x11in.x6in. (HxWxD). The waste receptacle (basket) is not big, and will fill up often. It is nice that the top of the basket will fit into a plastic grocery bag, for easy emptying and inexpensive refuse disposal. There is a window on the front of the basket to indicate when it should be emptied, which is nice. It should be emptied at that time to prevent recirculating paper from damaging the shredder, according to the manual.

So far, the unit has worked well considering price and better shred security of the diamond cut versus strip cut.
The information previously stated is not a problem for me, though I will need to keep all the things in mind while using the unit.

For the price/performance, and as long as you keep the stated information in mind, the unit may well work well for you.

I to received the labeler with just the tape inside the machine, no bonus tape. I figured Amazon would make it right. The labeler it self was really nice, I like all the different style's you can create very much improved over the older models. I heard from the company who said some of us received their NEW packages that do not include the bonus tape, that if you saved the packaging, then you'd get the tape you paid for. Who saves the packaging?? not me in the recycling it goes. Oh well at least the labeler works as described.!
