CASIO Spanish / English Color Translator Dictionary EW-S4000E EWS4000E - SPANISH VERSION Review

This is not your father's pocket translator. It contains 12 Oxford dictionaries in one awesome device. This one is the Spanish-English model and has dictionaries to go from English to Spanish or Spanish to English as well as separate Spanish and English dictionaries and an English thesaurus, all of which make it an ideal tool for the Spanish-English professional interpreter or translator. However, it also has a myriad of other English dictionaries including dictionaries of Collocations (typical word combinations), Idioms, Grammar & Usage, Learner's Wordfinder, Business English, Phrasal Verbs, a guide to British & American culture, and a Britannica Concise Encyclopedia! These tools make it useful for a student of English at any level, beginner to advanced. There is also a vocabulary word tool which you can use to compile lists of vocabulary words for later study -- another useful tool for students. There is even a pronunciation feature which reads the words out! In English it's a native speaker's voice; in other languages it's a computerized simulation. Pronunciations can be heard through a built-in speaker or stereo headphones (included).

As if all that weren't enough, it also comes with a calculator, a few games, 100 famous works of world literature, famous speeches & quotes, a travel dictionary (Multilingual Word and Phrasebank) in 6 different languages, and the ability to download your own text files (with software available on Casio's website). Alternatively, there is a micro SD card port. You can load your .txt files onto a micro SD card and the machine can access them that way.

This device is an upgrade to the older EW-S3000V and 3100V, which have a silver body and a grayscale screen. The screen on this 4000E and the only slightly older 4000C is a beautiful color screen and it has a black body -- much more attractive in my opinion. You may customize some of the images on this device with your own .jpg files, also accessible via a micro SD card. The 4000E has newer versions of almost all dictionaries. A colleague of mine has the 4000C and I compared the two: most of the copyrights for the dictionaries on the 4000C are around 2004 while on the 4000E the copyrights are around 2010.

The keys on this device are rubbery and have a good feel & grip. The keyboard layout is QWERTY and the layout of the various function buttons is fairly intuitive. If I had one gripe it would be that the scroll up/down buttons and the page up/down buttons are on opposite sides of the keyboard. Battery life seems very good so far on 2 AA batteries. I have been using this thing every day for a week for at least an hour a day and the battery meter still shows a full charge. It is small enough to fit in my suit coat pocket (or a purse) yet is robust enough for this professional interpreter to take on all his assignments and still feel suitably equipped and ready for anything!

***ONE VERY IMPORTANT NOTE***
The manual for this product and some of the function keys are in Spanish! I'm not sure if an English manual is available on Casio's website, but if you don't read at least a little Spanish, I would recommend checking this out first.
