Before I traveled with this talking dictionary, I wrote a fairly scathing review. But after using it for 3 weeks in a French speaking country, I must change my tune. On the downside, the device does not work as well as free online tools. The audio isn't as clear or natural-sounding as you can find on the internet, and there is no option to type in a short phrase or sentence and expect a translation. Several features were designed for French speakers visting the U.S.(such as the Oxford English Dictionary and American history lessons) but the equivalent features weren't included for English speakers visiting France. On the up side ... when you type in a key word such as "throat" suggested phrases are often provided such as "Do you have anything for a sore throat?" This large collection of phrases was not found in the Phrase Book section where I originally looked for them, but in the section for French-English and English-French dictionaries. I spent most of my time using these features. The light weight compact devise fit neatly in my pocket. It had a large enough vocabulary to be actually useful - a common criticism of the less expensive models. The audio gave me a reliable indication of correct pronunciation. My French hosts had fun with it too. Bottom line - I wanted a model that worked exactly like the online tools, but it isn't that sort of tool. Still, it was a lot easier to pack around than a small computer and was, in the end, an acceptable compromise.
