Handheld USB Continuous Scanning Barcode Bar-code Scanner Reader with Hands Free Adjustable Stand Review

This scanner is a good choice for reading most common barcodes. It uses a laser scanner instead of a CCD so it can scan at longer distances than CCD scanners (Most CCD scanners must be positioned close to the barcode in order to scan). Using this laser scanner I have scanned magazine barcodes at approx 6" distance which a CCD scanner cannot do. The disadvantage of a laser scanner is that it uses moving parts (and may be more susceptible to damage from falls/rough handling). Also this scanner requires high contrast between the background color and the barcode print (black print on white background scans fine but purple print on white does not scan easily - with low contrast barcodes I have found it is better to scan FURTHER rather than CLOSER). The USB interface means it's plug and play, no drivers required since it emulates a USB keyboard.
DEFAULT OPERATION:
When you plug it in it beeps twice and the blue light turns on. To scan you hold down the trigger which will turn on the laser. When it detects and scans a barcode it will beep and the laser turns off even if you are still holding down the trigger (this prevents inadvertent repeat scans). If you require the laser to be active continuously (which you would if using the holder) you can program the scanner using the manual. Like most scanners, programming is done by scanning special barcodes in the manual (so DON'T LOOSE THE MANUAL).
THE GOOD:
+ Inexpensive and works.
THE BAD:
- May not scan low contrast barcodes easily or at all.
- Manual refers to a scanner with a different interface (PS/2 keyboard). I'm not sure what options apply to the USB scanner, however this will not be a problem if you do not need to change options or disable barcode types from the default settings.
- No PDF manual is included and since this is a generic/OEM product there is no indication of where to download one. (I really would like to have a PDF manual since I tend to lose paperwork).
