Franklin DBE-1490 Merriam-Webster Spanish-English Dictionary Review

I have to admit, I was very hesitant to order this product after reading some of the reviews. I was seriously considering finding the older 1440 model, because one of it's reviews was so positive. But I called Franklin and talked to one of their techs, who convinced me to buy this. I'm so glad he did. My husband and I are serious Spanish students (study several hours per day),and are planning to move to Mexico. We also have several Mexican employees. The 1450 is ideal for us. It is really meant for Mexico, and South America, not Spain. It tells you when a word is appropriate for a certain country. What I love about it is that nearly all the words I have ever looked up for translation have been available, with very good definitions. Also it corrects spelling errors. More importantly, with many words that have variable meanings, it gives examples of sentences to show how variable the meaning can be. This has been invaluable for us, since the tendency in learning a language is to try to translate quite literally, which is often inappropriate.(Example: Caer;
1:to fall, to drop
2:to collapse
3:to hang down
4:caer bien - to be pleasant, to be likable<me caes bien: I like you>
5:caer mal or caer gordo: to be unpleasant, to be unlikable
6:caerse:to fall down)In the past, I would have been tempted to use 'me gusta' to say I liked someone; however, this would have implied I had amorous feeling for them (oops!) Who would have guessed?
This info can also be found in the book, 'Breaking out of Beginner's Spanish', which is also highly recommended, but the electronic translator keeps it right at your finger tips.My husband was a dedicated hard copy dictionary user, who thought I was wasting my money, until he realized how fast, easy, and on-the-mark the Franklin is. He "borrowed" my 1450 so often that I finally ordered another one for him, and another one for my 13-y.o.
Verb conjugations do take a little time,(not long enough to irritate me,still a useful function), but this is not primarily what I use it for. There are so many other good products on the market for that, such as the Warren Hardy flashcards ([...] the Real Spanish Path ([...] etc. I hardly ever use any of the other functions, just the translator. It's very quick to switch from English to Spanish (how do you say?) to Spanish to English (what's that word mean?) If you forget and type in an English word in the Spanish function, one button will automatically switch you over, so you don't have to re-type it. By the way, don't forget to follow the arrows on your display pad. There is always much more info than what you can originally see, so you need to keep scrolling down to read it. Also, be clear about this, the translator does not translate phrases, only single words. Bien viaje! Functionally this is a great product and contains many well thought out features, but it contains many typos and mistakes in the text portion. You cannot rely on the text as correct. IT IS NOT AN ACCURATE TEXT BIBLE. I notified the manufacturer 5 months ago about the errors and they said an update that corrects the many mistakes would be available in May, 2011. It is now July, 2011 and Now Bible Customer Service has stopped responding to my email inquiries. Do not purchase this product if you want an accurate Bible!
UPDATE on May 10, 2012: I believe that Leonard Williams, who wrote a review for this product on Feb. 2, 2012, is Vice President of Sales/Marketing at the Danteck Group (mfg for the NowBible,) and is also President and General Manager at The KJV Store. For him to post a review of this product without disclosing this information is misleading. If he is in fact the same person, he will be biased and readers should take his comments with caution. Before you purchase this product do yourself a favor and look at their web site to make sure they have made necessary corrections available. NowBible's home page is [...] While on the home page click on software updates. Leonard states an update would be available on March 1, 2012, which as of this posting is now over two months past.

Urging other customers to buy another product insteadI bought this Franklin SA 206 Spelling Ace for my 10-year-old son hoping that it would be a less expensive version of the Franklin MWD-1440 Dictionary and Thesaurus that I use and enjoy.Unfortunately, the Franklin SA 206 Spelling Ace only has a single line display (albeit with very large characters) which requires him to scroll constantly to read the entire dictionary or thesaurus entry. Because of this, he's always borrowing my Franklin MWD-1440 -- which has a five line display -- and is consequently much easier to use.If you need a dictionary and thesaurus, get the Franklin MWD-1440 for the five-line display.If you don't need the thesaurus, get the Franklin HW 216 Homework Wiz Plus (which I bought for my eight-year-old daughter, who loves it) which -- is a dictionary only -- and has a two-line display.The Franklin MWD-1440 Dictionary and Thesaurus, and the Franklin HW 216 Homework Wiz Plus are used constantly. Franklin Electronic Publishers BES-1890 Speaking Spanish-English Dictionary Review

I've had this dictionary about a month and a half and the few reviews I could find prior to buying it were not overly positive. But I bought it anyway and couldn't be happier with it. It is intuitive, very fast, and translates almost all the words I have entered. I have used it almost every day since I am attempting to move up from a high beginner to a strong intermediate in Spanish by month's end.

I have been in Buenos Aires for 11 days, with 20 to go, taking a 3 week Spanish course in a language school. I am in a low intermediate class and we have homework assignments and lots of exercises and speaking each day. I use the Franklin dictionary constantly when I don't know a word or need the equivalent in Spanish. The best part about the little computer in my opinion is the conjugations.

I have had and will have more class lessons in conjugations, so far only the present tense. When I am stuck on an irregular or any other verb I enter it into the dictionary, hit the conj key and bingo, aqui esta. Successively hitting the conj key takes you through all the tenses in all persons. While my classmates are fumbling around with their Spanish-English translation books, I have the verb, its meaning, and have already conjugated it, if applicable. It's my favorite feature and really helps me to learn the verbs and their forms.

The negatives are the rather poor audio for some of the translations (not all) and the fact that the screen is not backlit, although I have had absolutely no problem seeing it in normal or even somewhat low light.

I use it in restaurants here in Buenos Aires while I'm waiting or eating and can practice Spanish by inputting words or reading and translating phrases. It fits easily in the pocket of my shorts and I'd replace my BES 1890 immediately if anything happened to it.

If you're serious about learning espanol, or simply need a new translator, I recommend it. For the serious estudiante, it's more than worth the cost.

Franklin KJV-570 Holy Bible, King James Version Review

Got the first one for my wife. After using it myself, got another one for myself. Bought one more to give as a gift for my Bishop. A friend bought one after he saw one in use. I use it mostly for the concordance. Just type in a few key words, press enter, and locate that scripture that you can quote, but for some reason you can't locate. Well worth the price.
