Got this a replacement for our Fellowes Powershred W-11C 11 Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder (3103201) - which we really liked and received a 5 star review from me. This shredder, though twice the price, definitely lives up to the higher cost with better build quality, faster and more complete shredding, and ease of use.

Pros:
- Handles everything I've thrown into it quickly, including multiple sheets of paper.
- The jam notification worked fine for me, letting me know that 12 pieces of paper was just too much - BEFORE it got bogged down.
- Child lockout is easy for adults to use, but would be very difficult for kids
- Can leave it on all the time, and just put stuff directly in to shred.
- The power cord is heavy duty, ~3 feet long, and feels substantial.
- Kills staples, paperboard, etc., with no challenge
- All metal shredding inside - no cheap plastic like others. We had one that was plastic everywhere, and it barely lasted a month. You get what you pay for.
- It's quiet. Very quiet compared to the W-11C - maybe 1/2 the volume when shredding. With a 6 month old in the house, quiet is good (when we can get it!)

Cons:
- It can be difficult to get the container back into the machine after emptying. We have it on a tile surface and it's still difficult sometimes. Would be challenging on carpet.

The shredder does a good job of destroying the paper fed into it, but I have difficulty feeding paper into the machine. Swingline EX10-06 Cross-Cut Jam Free Shredder, 10 sheets, 1-2 Users (1757392) Review

We bought this shredder because the "Level 3" shreds still had readable fragments in it. We've used this one for about 3 loads now and it's working great so far. The shreds are not readable and effectively impossible to piece together, so very sufficiently secure for any personal use. We try not to put 6 sheets through at once because it makes heavy work of that, and are oiling it as recommended every full bin. When you remove the bin, it's a little tricky to get back in and you have to push on both sides. Overall, the construction of the plastic is a bit flimsy but the mechanism seems to work fine. Much better than my former shredder, where you had to lift the top off.

Swingline Stack-and-Shred 80X Hands Free Shredder, Cross-Cut, 80 Sheets, 1 User (1757574) Review

This shredder is great if you figure out the right technique. As you can see by the reviews, there is wide variation in the success with this shredder. I think the difference is that if you use flat paper - i.e. out of your printer with no folds - it seems to work fine. But if you are trying to shred bills or statements that came in the mail, the paper has folds in it that make it harder for the rollers to grab the paper and pull it down into the shredder, and it just spins its wheels, unless you use this trick.

HERE'S THE TRICK: Take your stack of paper, fold it in half, and crease the paper at the fold and then put the stack in the shredder with the crease pointing down (like a flattened out V) - the shredder will then grab sheets properly almost every time. The paper still sits more or less flat in the tray, but because the center of the paper has the crease, it dips down into the space between the rollers better so they can grab it. It seems to help if you put a really good crease in the bottom sheet to get things going.

Some other notes:

* You'll have to manually feed any paper that's odd sized, like those annoying checks your credit card company sends you. Although I did have better success with odd-sized stack and shred if I put all of the same kind in a clean stack and used the fold technique described above - the transfer checks from BofA worked okay this way.
* Redistribute the shredded paper occasionally (every 40 sheets or so) because it stacks up towards the back of the unit
* Clean the rollers occasionally by wiping them with a clean cloth to get paper shreds and dust off of them
* If you shred more over 130-150 sheets, it may stop and and show the red overheat light. Just open the unit up, take out any paper, and wait 5-10 minutes for it to cool off. Note that the red light won't be on when you have the lid open - dumb.
* If it does jam, and you reverse it, don't forget to put it back in the auto mode. A couple times I thought it wasn't working because it was running, but it was actually still in reverse mode and of course not shredding! Oops!

Following this approach, I was able to shred a whole stack of paper we'd built up because our old shredder required manual feeding. It was maybe 500 sheets in one evening.

So I recommend this shredder, but Swingline did a bad job of writing the manual and explaining how to have better success with it.

Black & Decker CC800 8-Sheet Crosscut Paper Shredder with Power Boost Graphite Review

I've been needing a paper shredder for quite some time now. It's so tiring to rip up paper with sensitive information on it into bits and pieces! So I did some research online on the models that I had an interest in and went out to the physical stores and did a price comparison.

I came across the B&D CC800 at Walmart and it was priced at only $59.88. I noticed that it had the power boost feature which seemed quite interesting. This was around the price that I was willing to spend, so I purchased it. With tax, it came out to be only $64.52 and I didn't have to wait for it to be shipped to me.

I went home, opened up the box and it had a really appealing looking to it compared to the ugly one that they had on sale at Office Max for $39.99 and that thing did the ugly diamond cuts. Yuck!

So I read the instruction and then test-drive my new paper shredder. It sounded just as loud as my Fellowes shredder that suddenly died one day after releasing out a burnt smell. Even though it says 8 sheets, I am not going to overwork my shredder. Because I really want it to last this time! So I'll rest my shredder and use it more sparingly this time.

PROS: Nice and elegant look to it. The protective lid and power boost are such great features on this machine. It does the beautiful cross cut shreds and it does the job!

CONS: It would have been better if the lid popped up by itself all the way instead of us having to lift it and move it to its position. The slit to put the paper in seems rather small, but I guess you'll get the hang of it once you get used to it.

Overall, it's a really nice paper shredder by Black & Decker! I would recommend it to anybody that's on a budget and needs a paper shredder that can get the job done. If you'll be shredding a lot of paper all day long, then you should consider forking out the money and getting something that's more heavy duty. I would say that this is more of a medium duty shredder. Lastly, don't forget to lubricate your paper shredder from time-to-time to extend its life, so that it can function as if it is still a new paper shredder.

UPDATE [12-30-2009]: Dummy me! I totally forgot about this review until today! :) After 3 months, my shredder is still going strong. I use it from time-to-time to shred my unwanted junk mail. I don't know if Amazon is still offering this model or not. But if my memory serves me right, they still sell it at Walmart. So far no buyer's remorse yet in making this purchase.

Just like with everything in this life, if you treat it with respect, it will most likely last for a very long time. Even machines need rest! Come to think of it, my router and DSL modem stays on all year round. The only time they're off is when the electric goes out and that's about it. Now those things are real workhorses! Let's just say, they're an exception to the norm.

Anyways, with the recent merger of Stanley and Black & Decker, you now have two household brands that you can trust for many years to come. Hopefully, they'll keep both brand names around just like HP & Compaq did!

See you on the other side of the New Year--the beginning of new decade! Fresh start for everyone and great time to change for the better! I know what I'll do for 2010. I'll start keeping track of its actual run time. So that means I'll be back for more updates for sure! ;)

UPDATE [2-23-2010]:

As you can see, no matter how good your review is, there will always be backlashes. The truth is, each person is entitled to their own opinion of any particular product. I wrote mine and I am getting crucified by some idiot that doesn't agree with my comments. I wrote what I wrote and will not change it, just because someone HATES me here. My shredder is still going strong and they still sell it at Wal-Mart, last I checked. I don't know if it's the same exact model, but it looked similar. I will confirm it the next time I get out to Wal-Mart.

As for the updates on run time, I won't have time to keep close statistics on it like that. All I know is that I use it everyday and I am happy with this product. It's the best shredder I've ever owned and worth every penny of it.

UPDATE [2-24-2010]:

To better inform you on whether you should purchase this shredder or some other brand, I have uploaded some sample shreds for you to observe. The paper shredder used as the comparison to the CC800 was the Embassy TQ101Bc. The TQ101Bc does the diamond cuts versus the CC800's confetti cut. As far as security goes, both are decent shredders in their respective price point ranges. But if you want that extra security, you might want to look at another shredder that does even tinier shreds than these models. Price? The TQ101Bc retails at $50, but was purchased as a closeout for only $25. The CC800 was purchased at Walmart for $65 and retails on Amazon for $70.

UPDATE [10-4-2011]:

My CC800 still works after over two years of owning it and Walmart continues to sell this exact model at most of its stores. If this shredder is not worthy, then why would Walmart continue selling it after all these years? In conclusion, it's not the product that's bad, it's the users not knowing how to use it and abusing it that makes the product looks bad.

This cross cut paper shredder is so far the best we have owned. It does the job smoothly and efficiently. I also bought the sheets which oil the machine instead of the bottles of machine oil. The machine oil after a few years becomes thick like jelly and messes up the machine. I feel the sheets with oil in them are better and will make the machine run more efficiently. This machine is so quiet that you can run it after hours in an apartment complex without complaints from the neighbors.
