Franklin Merriam-Webster ((Speaking)) Spanish-English Dictionary (BES-1850) Review

I purchased the Franklin BES-1850 Speaking Spanish/English Dictionary over a year ago and have carried it across 3 continents in my briefcase, backpack, or purse -- a lot of wear and tear and it still works great! The dimensions/weight are similar to a lot of printed travel dictionaries, but the BES-1850 carries much, much more content.As a student of the Spanish language, I have found the BES-1850 to be extremely helpful for quickly looking up translations. Unlike printed dictionaries that require you to know the infinitive version of a verb in order to find it in the dictionary, you can just type in any conjugated verb form and immediately get to the infinitive and its definition. This is extremely helpful when watching Spanish television/movies or when reading books and newspapers in Spanish. If you misspell a word in English or Spanish, the dictionary displays a list of suggested words so that you can pick out the correct spelling. Many word definitions also include a list of idiomatic phrases/expressions that incorporate the word -- very handy and a delightful surprise to me when I first started using the BES-1850. And the dictionary contains an extensive list of words, too. It has been on very rare occasion that the dictionary has not come back with a translation.As for the pronounciation feature, I must admit that I debated whether to spend the extra $ on this version in order to have this feature. I'm glad I did -- the pronunciations are reasonably accurate. What's especially helpful is to be able to hear where the accents on words are placed. The pronounciation feature is reasonably clear, but not great. I were purchasing an electronic dictionary just to take on a week-long vacation, the extra $ for this feature may not be worth it.The screen display is definitely readable but the contrast could be improved. The backlight feature is a big help in dark environments. Don't expect the BES-1850 to have the slick features of the new, high-end hand PDA devices that go for $400-$500 - the BES-1850 only costs $100! I do not use the game or address book features of the BES-1850 and cannot comment.I'm very happy with the BES-1850 and would buy it again. Franklin Spanish/English Dictionary Bookman Card Review

Just wanted to let you all know that the quality of this bookman card is not the same as that of the built-in information that comes with the newer electronic dictionaries. First of all, all text is confined to a small rectangle that fills about a half of your screen. The rest of the screen remains blank and unused, resulting in a lot of scrolling with your arrow keys. Secondly, the pronunciation is not quite as great as that of the speaking english dictionary. The speech tends to be a bit unclear and riddled with static. Finally, the definitions are often rather brief and the conjugation leaves out some inflected forms.

However, this is the only speaking spanish dictionary that I am aware of. With all of its flaws it still remains as one of my most valuable tools in learning spanish.

I bought mine as a reference for times when I don't have access to the internet (dictionary.com is a lifesaver), like when I'm on the plane or train or reading in bed and really don't feel like getting up. The screen is a little annoying but not off-putting. The lack of pronunciation was mind boggling to me. The first time I used mine I kept scrolling up and down, thinking that I'd missed it somewhere. But at least the words are broken down into syllables, which gives me a good idea of how the word should be said. But the thing that's driving me crazy is that half of the time I go to look up a word it's not in there. I'm thinking of getting the 'advanced dictionary and thesaurus' bookcard--though I don't think Amazon sells them-- and hopefully that will fix the problem. Kinda annoying that I'd have to pay another [money] just to get it to do what I bought it for. On the other hand, maybe I should have known better since I have the same problem with old-fashioned paper and glue collegiate dictionaries.Otherwise it's great. It's lightweight, turns on instantly, even looks kinda cute. A few tweaks and the next model could be brilliant. I tutored a 9th grader who owned this model. When I first tried to look up a word and needed to scroll down I couldn't figure it out, but that was with no manual and 2 minutes of examination. Shortly after that I purchased the Spanish English version by Franklin for myself - exact same layout - I READ the MANUAL - the up down scroll is on the side of the unit - left of the screen - not on the keyboard portion of the Spanish/English one. That scroll button is quite functional. Don't let the previous review dissuade you from purchasing this item. The only thing I can say about it is that with only 100,000 words its use becomes less valuable the older you are and the greater your vocabulary - you have to remember that the words a, the, an, it, he, she, etc. are part of that 100k. Would definitely recommend to high school students and below. Hope that helps.

Franklin MWD-1490 Merriam-Webster Dictionary and Thesaurus with Comprehensive Reference Set Review

I recently got one and i'm pretty satisfied so far. Features of this include:

1. Word of the day (random word everytime you turnon).

2. Super-jump (jump to definition of any word in the screen).

3. dictionary <-> thesaurus switch given a word

4. wrong spelling suggestion

5. word finder (by using ? or * characters). "?" will match any character. "*" will match any one or more characters. ie, "an?" will match "and, ant, any, etc"

6. Organizer (clock, address book, Calculator, Converter, Currency)

7. It has exercises (Spelling bee, SAT, flashcards)

8. It has 7 games (anagrams, hangman, jumble, word builder, word train, link four, tictactoe

9. 5-language translator

10. Display has 3 font option (small, large, medium).

Given that it's less than $50, it's a pretty good product. The display is OK and readable (don't compare it to colored back-lit LCD screen). It doesn't have backlight bec it's powered by 2 CR2032 battery. Keys are good. Dictionary content is the typical Webster book (not the heavy and thick one). Don't expect all known words to exist.
